The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ)

The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Austria’s main centre-left party has been the largest party in Austria and the senior governing coalition partner since 2006. The oldest party in Austria, it was founded in 1888 in then Austro-Hungary. Since 1970 the SPÖ has typically been Austria’s dominant party and the SPÖ even won an absolute majority in 1971 which it held until 1983, despite the proportional representation electoral system.

The SPÖ is typically viewed as one of the more traditionally socialist parties in Europe, and some minor factions still hold with Marxist ideology.

The party is a member of the Socialists and Democrats faction in the European Parliament. According to the SPÖ has voted alongside its S&D allies 92.8% of the time in this parliament. This makes it the fifth most disloyal S&D member.
