Socialist Party Different

Socialist Party Different (SP.A). SP.A is the Flemish successor of the Belgian Socialist Party. Much weaker than its French-speaking equivalent, the Socialist Party, it is also a much more moderate party, with the addition of ‘Different’ to its name, a sort of Flemish equivalent of, say, re-branding yourself ‘New Labour’.

The SP.A is a member of the federal government and a junior coalition partner in Flanders. It is primarily strong in Flemish cities, particularly in the university town of Ghent, where it governs in coalition with Groen.

The SP.A is a member of the Socialists and Democrats. It votes alongside its partners just under 95% of the time, broadly average for a S&D member though less than the French-speaking Socialists.
