Vacancy – Climate and democracy project officer (Edinburgh)

About the Role 

The Democratic Society (Demsoc) is Europe’s leading democracy organization, working in 24 countries to support participation, open government and new forms of democracy.  

We are seeking a self-starter with a passion for democracy and an ambition to solve climate change through democratic not just technocratic solutionsWorking with Edinburgh City Council, you will help us bring together democratic design, organisational development and practical participation, to deliver long-term citizen participation in the decisions, plans and projects needed to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.  

You will work as our local connector on the ground in Edinburgh, making connections within the city and between the city and our wider work across Europe. You will help to design and deliver democratic climate experiments in Edinburgh, and contribute to the wider work of Demsoc. You will have wide discretion to identify new potential projects, to grow your skills, and to support and connect our community of members.  

As part of our programme team, you will also support our wide-ranging democracy projects at local and national level in Scotland, with the opportunity to contribute to wider European projects and work with a motivated and multinational team across Europe. Current projects include Scotland’s Citizens’ Assembly, work on participatory budgeting in communities, and work on engagement and artificial intelligence. 

Responsibilities 

As local connector climate for Edinburgh 

    • Being the lead contact for Demsoc’s work in Edinburgh and with local partners, including local government
    • Managing stakeholders and processes in Edinburgh independently 
    • Engaging with and connecting networks to support democratic innovation in Edinburgh
      • Identifying new opportunities to grow Demsoc’s work and projects
    • Supporting and growing our community of members

As part of the programme team 

    •  Delivering specialist participatory and co-productive activities, including designing materials, delivering events and producing reports on the outcomes of the processes 
    • Facilitating deliberative activities, and creating environments that allow civil dialogue and input from all participants 
    • Conducting research and analysis activities, including designing and running focus groups, situational analysis and desktop research
      • To provide information for project documentation regarding the planning, delivery and outcomes of our projects for a range of stakeholders
    • To ensure projects are delivered to the required level of quality and defined timescales

Essential Competencies 

    •  Self-starter
    • Strong organisational skills and a delivery mindset
    • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate issues and resolve matters independently, developing sound pragmatic solutions  
    • Strong personal commitment to democracy and our core values of openness, equality and internationalism 
    • Ability to work in partnership with and influence local government officers and other senior local figures
    • Excellent communication and influencing skills
      • Good facilitation skills
    • Ability to support more senior team members on business development. 

Desirable Competencies 

    • Experience and understanding of climate change and related issues
      • Experience and understanding of local networks, politics and democratic initiatives
    • Knowledge of another language used in places where Demsoc works is beneficial

Salary band: C3 (c. £37,500 pa)

Contract: Fixed term 6 months, renewable
